smalleco_ICON Wavehub Update
21/Sep/07

The Wavehub Project, a test bed of wave energy harnessing devices to be positioned in the Atlanctic Ocean roughly 10 miles north of St Ives in West Cornwall, has this week been granted planning permission by the government, as part of its Green Energy drive.
Concerns have been raised in the surfing community about the impact on surfing conditions on some of W.Cornwall’s beaches (amongs Britain’s finest). Last year, articulated by the BSA, with emphasis on possible knock on effects on the tourist industry, these concerns were put to the South West Regional Development Agency, who in turn commissioned an independent report by respected Oceanographer and surfer Dr. Kerry Black. Dr. Black’s findings have suggested little or no impact on the surf, and allayed most surfers’ fears, although we’re keen to see actualisation of his recommendation for stringent monitoring of effects both before and after installation (probably 2009).

• We agree to the Wave Hub subject to monitoring as detailed and recommended by Dr Black’s Peer Review Report.
• We also seek an assurance that the cable capacity will not be increased nor further cables added without having had the results of monitoring and without further consultation approved.
• We seek an assurance that the energy take will not exceed 20%.
• We would prefer that an independent body, ‘SurfCom’(!), will commission maintain and analyse results from the wave buoys around the Wave Hub site, as recommended by Dr. Black.
• All results should be publicly published.

Wave Hub News
09/Nov/2006
After 6 months of close discussion with SWRDA (South West Regional Development Agency), the BSA representing surfers who were concerned about the experimental wave energy hub off the South West Coast, have persuaded SWRDA to allow an independent peer review of their work.
World renowned oceanographer, Professor Kerry Black of ASR ltd. has been accepted by SWRDA to undertake the review and will be assessing all aspects of the proposed project, to ensure that there are no detrimental environmental effects and that all the concerns that have been raised are addressed.
The BSA is very happy that Professor Black is looking at the project, and looks forward to his findings. We hope and trust that if there are no ill effects found, that this will allay all our fears.

smalleco_ICON British Surfing Association - Wave Hub Statement
Aug/06
"We approve of the Wave Hub and the technology in principle, but remain fearful of near shore surface devices. Extensive farms we believe could have broader effects than we can envisage at this time. Putting devices in an active Coastal Environment could very well have far reaching and damaging effects that may be very difficult to reverse."

Dissertation Competition
In recent years, the British Surfing Association has become increasingly aware of the pressing need to protect our surfing sites, many of which have been degraded by coastal engineering works. In some cases, we believe that more benign or even advantageous methods such as multi-purpose reefs, could have been used.
One problem we have is that unlike for example, the Ramblers Association, we have not managed to establish recognition or rights. Coastal engineering work can proceed without our organisation even becoming aware during a theoretic consultation process. >>Click here for the full story and how to enter<<
