Yesterday saw another day with Britain's finest surfers proving they are a force to contend with on a global platform.

Three members of the Freespirit British Open Surf Team have powered through to the final 32 competitors taking part in the World Surfing Games, the equivalent of the surfing Olympics, at Huntington Beach, California. There are 38 countries and around 350 men and women taking part in the event.

Alan Stokes, from Newquay, Sam Lamiroy, originally from Tynemouth and Johnny Fryer from the Isle of Wight , made it through their heats.

Alan Stokes said: “I don’t think the American I was in the heat with was too pleased that I was stopping him from getting waves, but that could have been the difference between making it to the next stage or not.”

Sam Lamiroy was in a heat with an America surfer ranked seventh in the world. “I have been finding it really hard to find good waves, but I have done all I can during my heat and it has been enough,” he said. “I have been surfing against some of the great surfing nations, such as South Africa, and knocked them out of the event, which is fantastic.”

The World Surfing Games can be watched live on the internet and during each heat the commentators have been reading emails sent from the UK to the British team.

Team manager, Paul Jeffery, from Newquay, said: “This contest is making history for British surfing. We are getting a lot of respect and it is great to know we are being watched back home and getting the support we need.”
