The purpose of the British Surf Schools scheme is to provide a clear set of rules for the safe and successful management of surfing activity on British beaches.

This enables a surf school to comply with current national, regional and local beach, recreational and sport legislation. It gives clear BSA guidance for UK schools to organise and manage "best practices" for coaching of surfing that is seen as consistent, coherent and comprehensive across all levels

The overall aim of the scheme is to ensure that all surf school customers receive the highest standard of safety and success in their surfing lessons

The surf schools that are accepted and registered on this scheme are the only schools that can be advertised as a British Surf School and appear as such on the BSA website

All British Surf Schools are graded as either: Foundation, Recreational, Performance, Academy, and Centre of Excellence. nad this is dependant upon:

  • The qualifications of the coaches employed
  • The level of the surf coaching programmes offered (ie beginners, advanced)
  • The physical equipment and practical resources available for customers learning
