PRE-EVENT PRESS RELEASE

SCHOOLS OUT!

Rather than getting their uniforms ready for a return to their desks next week, school children across Great Britain will be packing their board bags this week in preparation for the Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships 2007 in association with Calypso. They’ll be making their way to Woolacombe in North Devon for two days of team and individual competition and organisers expect to see some hot talent as well as ensuring fun for all.

Conditions look promising with 3-4ft clean waves expected over another weekend of stunning weather. Over 120 children aged between 12 - 18 have already entered from 35 schools across the South West, England, Wales and The Channel Islands and they’ll all be looking to topple last year’s winners, locals Braunton, from their spot.

Categories include the Under 18s, Under 16s, Under 14s and bodyboarding and longboarding heats and many of the teams include the Britain’s top Junior and Grom talent. School teams are made up of fours and must contain at least one bodyboard rider or one girl and one surfer

In the Under 18s Billy Norways from St Ives will be defending his title and in the Under 16s Stuart Campbell from Braunton will be doing likewise. Local girl Kathleen Spears dominated the girls heats last year and will be looking to impress the watching spectators again.

National Director of the BSA Karen Walton said, “Hunter/Billabong British Schools Championships in association with Calypso is shaping up to be a great event this year with an even bigger entry than ever before. It’s a brilliant way for them all to end their Easter holidays and we’re looking forward to seeing them all in the water. Thanks in advance to all of the sponsors and all of the enthusiastic teachers and parents who are making the trip to Devon. ”
