Day one of the annual British Student Surfing Championships proved to be a very exciting affair for both surfers and spectators alike. The competitors from as far afield as Scotland descended upon Newquays Fistral beach to be met with pefect 4-6ft offshore surf!

The event, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world, is made up of
78 teams from universities all across the UK. For over twenty years the event has grown and now has more than 435 surfers battling it out for both university and individual titles.

The competition has been closely fought over recent years between Exeter and Plymouth University. This year could prove to be even tougher for them as with the newly formed Falmouth surf team making their debut. Under the leadership of a confident team captain Lucas Flumm they hope to walk away with a trophy.

But by the end of the day it was business as usual for the reigning champions Plymouth. They managed to keep a clean sheet for both their A and B teams with a faultless performance, putting pressure on their rivals. Exeter felt this the most. Some uncharacteristic mistakes led to some heavy losses in the first round.

As the conditions got even better when the tide pushed so did the standard of surfing. There were a few great individual performances. The best heat and score of the day though was from Tom Case of Swansea Institute. He posted two huge scores by displaying some strong powerful surfing that impressed the judges. Reflecting on the first days surfing head judge Mike Durkin says “the standard of surfing this year has increased once again with some great heats today”

Day 2 of the largest competition in Europe kicks off at Fistral Beach on Saturday 3rd March at 8.30 am
